HUMBLE – There is something special about this year’s Friendswood Lady Mustang soccer team.

Once again they displayed all the tools on the field needed to win a state championship.

Their tools Friday were solid defense and ball-control offense, and they used their tools to defeat the Lumberton Lady Raiders (19-2-3) 1-0.

Friendswood was not intimidated by the size of the Lady Raiders on Friday night at George Turner Stadium in the Region III-4A semifinals.

In a physical game that saw the Lady Raiders commit 11 fouls, including two yellow cards and one red card that happened early in the match causing Lumberton to only play with nine player’s majority of the contest.

The Lady Mustangs could not take advantage to score even though they had nine shots on goal, led by senior midfielder Zoe Cole, who had three good looks but could not find the back of the net.

In the second half, Friendswood controlled the ball for almost the entire half and did not allow a shot on goal till the 37th minute.

Sophomore forward Alex Frankhouser got Friendswood on the board with a strike within the goalie box past the diving Lumberton goalie with just more than 4 minutes into the second half.

Shortly after, sophomore midfielder Selina Vickery almost gave her Lady Mustangs there second goal, but the Lumberton goalie made a nice save.

In the final three minutes, the Frindswood defensive line prevented the desperate Lady Raiders from scoring.

In the final seconds the Lady Raiders had one last opportunity to tie the game with a penalty shot because of a hand ball from 14 yards out, but the shot sailed over the goal and the buzzer sounded.

This secured a birth in the Region III-4A Regional Championship for the ninth time in the last 10 years for the Lady Mustangs.

Friendswood defense held Lumberton to only seven shots on goal and outshot them 20-6.

Eight Lady Mustangs had at least one shot on goal.

Zoe Cole led the Lady Mustangs with six shots on goal. Vickery and junior forward Taylor Rue had three shots on goal for Friendswood.

The Lady Mustangs will be back at George Turner Stadium in Humble to play College Station (22-3-0), who won against Springs Woods 1-0, 1 p.m. today for the Region III-4A Regional Championship.
