KEMAH – The roars of speedboat engines will be in the air all weekend in the Kemah, Seabrook and Clear Lake areas, as the annual Texas Outlaw Challenge kicks off at 8 a.m. today

After an introduction and safety meeting at 8 a.m., the Outlaw Challenge will kickoff with a shootout speed challenge on a designated Galveston Bay safety course near the Kemah Boardwalk.

Racers will look to break last year’s speed record of 171 mph on the one-mile course.

After the speed challenge ends at about noon, the boats will then compete in poker runs, speeding to checkpoints to collect cards, from about noon to 4 p.m. at the first stop and from about 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the second stop.

The stops will be at participant Ken Armstrong’s Clear Lake home and the Topwater Grill in San Leon, respectively.

Participants will end the day with a fireworks show on the Kemah Boardwalk at 9:30 p.m. and an after-party at locations in Clear Lake and Kemah from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Racers will depart for the next stops on the poker run 10 a.m. Saturday, and will be riding throughout Clear Lake and Galveston Bay until about 6 p.m.

Participants will then begin playing their cards collected at each stop.

Saturday’s festivities will end with an awards ceremony at 10 p.m. then again with an after-party that will wrap up at about 2 a.m. at locations in Clear Lake and Kemah.

Closing ceremonies Sunday include brunch and a car show in Kemah beginning at 9 a.m. and another celebration from noon to 4 p.m.
