LEAGUE CITY — Playing with the nation’s best high school players, Clear Creek outfielder Satchel McElroy was named an all-star among the all-stars at the 2014 Area Code Baseball Games tournament in Long Beach, Calif., last week.

McElroy was one of 25 participants to be named to the All Area Code Team after the national tournament wrapped up Saturday.

The University of Houston commit said he was excited and honored when he received the news via email and credited continued hard work for receiving recognition as an elite high school player.

“It wasn’t easy, but I was just blessed to be there,” McElroy said.

An incoming senior, McElroy said his offseason work and accomplishments should serve as motivation for next season. In McElroy’s junior season, he batted .324 with three home runs, 21 RBIs in and 17 stolen bases, and his Wildcats team reached the regional quarterfinals in the state playoffs.

The Area Code Games consisted of eight regional all-star teams assembled by representatives from eight Major League Baseball franchises: the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, Washington Nationals, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics.

To make it to the All Area Code Baseball Games, players were required to go through invitation-only tryouts in the two months preceding the event.

At the tournament, players were evaluated by scouts from all 30 MLB teams, as well as college coaches. The scouts picked the top 25 at the tournament as the All Area Code Team.

The tournament is considered to be the beginning of a nine-month MLB interview process, culminating with the first-year player draft the following June — an event where McElroy said he has aspirations to see his name called.

McElroy will next put his talents on display with his Texas Rangers team at another large national tournament in Jupiter, Fla., in October.
