I surmise that most people, even my close friends, think of me as a real estate broker, perhaps a musician, or maybe as the teller of the stories about Galveston’s past.

Those are certainly components of me, but in reality, the best description would be that I am a serious lifetime student. Education and I go closely hand-in-hand.

It’s with the education hat on that I want to suggest a voluminous piece by Priscilla Long, “What Killed My Sister?” in the spring issue of Phi Beta Kappa’s The American Scholar.

It is a concise journey through schizophrenia, a disease that affects so many families. Of all of the mental disorders, it is probably the one that most frequently gets the tearful “Why me?” question.

In Ms. Long’s piece, you’ll see how schizophrenia came to challenge her charming sister, finally bringing her to escape it by an early death, and you’ll learn the many challenges the disease has provoked among those who study it.
