Adam Burklund’s op-ed (“It’s special interest groups that kill payday loan reform,” March 15, The Daily News) argues that consumer groups blocked predatory loan reforms in 2013. This fantasy overlooks the 82 Texas lobbyists that the industry paid to kill real reform.
Before a recent job switch, Burklund was a top aide to Sen. John Carona. The 2013 reform bill that Carona sponsored was timid enough to have been written by the payday industry that now employs Burklund. After Carona’s Senate colleagues rejected his bill and passed tougher reforms, industry lobbyists killed them in the House and Burklund seamlessly became an “official” spokesman for predatory lenders. Congratulations.
