Democracy is the backbone of a republic

Posted: Friday, July 12, 2013 12:00 am

Last month, in Word on the Street, Marvin Tyson wrote a letter informing me that America was a republic, not a democracy (“America is a constitutional republic,” The Daily News, June 14). This is very misleading. I learned in elementary school that America was a republic and democracy was the backbone of a republic.

In Webster’s dictionary it states that a “republic is a state governed by elected legislators.” “Democracy is (1) government by the people, (2) a country with such government, (3) social equality.” In short, democracy means “of the people, for the people and by the people.”
