After a presentation by Galveston Independent School District Superintendent Larry Nichols explaining the Galveston ISD tax ratification election ballot, the Galveston League of United Latin American Citizens Council 151 urges a “for” vote.

A “for” vote would raise the maintenance and operations tax by 2 cents per $100 of assessed value to provide pay raises for the lowest-paid GISD employees, as well as increase teacher salaries to be competitive with local school districts.

Raising the hourly rate of Galveston ISD’s lowest-paid staff with the goal of them ultimately earning a living wage is consistent with LULAC’s support of The Minimum Wage Fairness Act. The impact of an hourly wage increase is a key first step to increasing economic security and providing a respectable wage.

The increase in teacher salaries represented by a “for” vote makes a job with GISD attractive, and facilitates retention of existing outstanding teachers.

Ultimately, casting your “for” vote in the Galveston ISD tax ratification election will also result in a net 1-cent decrease for GISD taxpayers, with the accompanying 3-cent decrease in the interest and sinking fund tax rate.

A “for” vote on Tuesday is a win for taxpayers, hourly staff, teachers, parents and students. Please vote “for.”

Amy Quiroga

President
