Editor wrong about Rigs to Reefs

Posted: Thursday, August 21, 2014 12:00 am

Heber Taylor’s editorial “Not the time to sink Rigs to Reefs program” (The Daily News, Aug. 16) is right in suggesting that sound and unbiased peer-reviewed science should determine future public policy for responsible disposal of abandoned offshore drilling rigs in Gulf waters, but the same editorial is also sadly incorrect in implying that red snapper populations are habitat-limited in the Gulf, while proposing seafloor dumping of more rigs as a remedy.

As the Secretary of Interior currently re-evaluates how best to enforce long-standing contractual decommissioning agreements signed by oil companies that willingly promised to remove their rigs and restore the Gulf after petroleum production concluded, the future of the entire Gulf ecosystem is now in the balance.
