Sometimes people just don’t use — or have — common sense.

You see it every day on the roadway, and we’re not talking about that insane driver.

Researchers estimate nearly a half-billion pieces of visible litter accumulate annually along state-maintained highways, and about one-third of Texans — particularly young adults between the ages of 16 and 34 — admit to littering. Some of the most common litter found during roadside cleanups includes fast-food packaging, cigarette butts, candy wrappers and plastic bags.

It’s just stupid.

This week, the Texas Department of Transportation kicked off its campaign to keep state roads clean.

It’s serves as a good reminder for us to do what we should be doing anyway — throwing away your trash in the trash.

Here’s an interesting fact: Fines for littering can be as high as $500 for the first offense.

Repeat offenders can face fines up to $2,000 and 180 days in jail.

So, don’t be stupid, and don’t mess with Texas.
