TEXAS CITY —BP was negligent when it released more than 500,000 pounds of chemicals during a 40-day release in 2010, but no one was harmed by the emissions. That’s what a Galveston County jury found after listening to five weeks of testimony and reviewing scientific documents and engineering schematics.
More than 40,000 people, most represented by plaintiff’s attorney Tony Buzbee, sued BP over the emissions event at its former Texas City refinery. The jury’s verdict in October was connected to the first test trial, connected to those lawsuits. While it sets a bar for any future litigation, the jury’s decision hasn’t totally settled the issue.
