GALVESTON — A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years behind bars after a pair of vehicle thefts in 2012.

A jury last week found Fahd Saad Tanash guilty of felony theft. Judge Michell Slaughter, of the 405th District Court, sentenced Tanash on Tuesday.

Tanash was arrested in Hitchcock in December 2012 while driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Houston. After posting bond the next day, Tanash took a taxicab to a Texas City car dealership where he led employees to believe he was interested in purchasing a vehicle, the Galveston County District Attorney’s office said.

While looking at a pickup truck Tanash got the keys and drove off, but the vehicle’s navigation system was used to track him down in Houston, the district attorney’s office said.

While incarcerated in both Galveston County Jail and the Austin State Hospital, Tanash was an unruly inmate, officials said. The district attorney’s office said Tanash “assaulted and spit on multiple jailers, hospital staff and other patients. He also destroyed county property and attempted to escape custody on multiple occasions.”

Slaughter’s assessed punishment was the maximum allowed by law.
