GALVESTON — A Galveston man was in critical condition Monday after falling out of a golf cart driven by a man charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.
Mark McKenna, 53, fell out of the golf cart and hit his head on the pavement in the 4000 block of Liberty Drive on Sunday evening, police Sgt. Joshua Schirard said in a news release.
Firefighters and medical personnel treated McKenna at the scene and rushed him to the University of Texas Medical Branch. McKenna had emergency surgery and remained in critical condition at the hospital Monday, Schirard said.
Ronald Machac, 58, was driving the golf cart and told officers McKenna fell out as he turned the vehicle onto a driveway in front of the house where the two men were staying, Schirard said.
The two men had been on a boat that afternoon, police said.
Machac was given a field sobriety test and submitted to a blood test at the hospital, Schirard said.
He was arrested, charged with driving while intoxicated and booked on a $5,000 bond.
Additional charges could be filed against Machac, police said.
