Island population rebounds to 50,000, researcher estimates

GALVESTON — Five years after an epic beating by Hurricane Ike, the island’s population probably has rebounded to 50,000, but that fact may not matter much in the short run.

Dr. Karl Eschbach, a professor of population research at the University of Texas Medical Branch, said he based the estimate in part on growth in the student population at Galveston Independent School District.
