“One thing a new owner may not consider is the cost of a trailer. Registering and licensing makes the tally for horse care even higher“.
Did he try to rent a trailer or ask a friend to take horse to vet.
“He was aware something was wrong and may not have been able to get them to the vet“. If he was aware this makes it worse.
Did he call vet to see if they make stall calls. Did he call Habitat for Horses for help?
A horse is not a toy for us to play with until we are tired of.

This change this from a case of case of cruelty to livestock animals, to a case of child abuse of a child. Just change the word horse to child. What could justify a adult treating a child like this!. Would you be up in arms over the way a child was cared for. The same applies to this case.
When we buy a horse we take out a contract .
The contract we take out is with god ( if you don‘t believe in god change to self), we promise to give the care and love a horse requires.

He was aware something was wrong and may not have been able to get them to the vet.

This does not excuse what he did, just another factor to consider.

As I stated in the first story about this issue, if you like horses, you can go play with them, every day if you want, at Habitat for Horses.

    .
“Altamirano said he noticed the horses started losing weight in November and tried to do something about it. He gave them an over-the-counter de-wormer, changed the hay he was giving them and fed them horse feed every other day, he said“.
At this time ( November )the horses needed a vets help. Care of Horses need to be in hands of someone who knows what they are doing.
No water, (or little or poor quality) can drop pounds in a hurry.
Add to the issue little to no grain/hay/pasture , (IMHO), a horse could go from normal to emaciated in a month so the horses may have gotten in this shape in his care or lack of..
A lot of horses get fed in the morning and evening every day. They depend on use to keep them in shape if they are not in wild..

Nurse.Jayne, I'll say again, No excuse! If they were in that bad of shape when he "accepted" them, he should have turned the giver in for animal cruelty & gotten them proper care. I have absolutely no sympathy for this guy. He should have taught his daughter the right thing to do. And yes, people are enamored of horses, especially when you see them being sold for food for other countries & take a look at what our BLM is doing to wild horses. Maybe he's a good guy, but he's incredible stupid.

I'll say again: a lot of people are enamored of horses (especially little girls, and he has one) and do NOT know the extent of care an animal that size requires.

Even a dog needs walking daily and picking up after, feeding and heartworm medication, neutering and rabies shots.... it adds up quick.

That's why your Mom gave you such a hard time when you wanted one as a kid.

I actually know Dave.... and know him to be honest and kind. While many will see him as callous, I know he DOES feel bad about what happened.

I doubt he knew how bad the horses were when he accepted them; it takes much longer than six months for animals to be in the shape of disrepair found with these equines.

If he does get jail time, it's a maximum of one year county jail. Which means he will serve about 15 weeks.
