The College of the Mainland board of trustees approved a budget Friday morning, eliminating three staff positions and changing another position to part-time.

The job cuts saved an estimated $192,500.

Board Chairman Roney McCrary said the cuts would not affect students.

“We had asked the administration to see if there were some positions that we could eliminate that we really didn’t need and that would not affect instruction,” McCrary said.

McCrary said the eliminated positions were administrative and support staff. He declined to name the positions because the people who hold them had not been notified.

The board came into the meeting considering the elimination of up to nine positions.

However, McCrary said that the other five positions could not be removed from payroll this year.

“The other positions, those folks (have) got contracts, so they would not be affected the 2015 budget anyway,” McCrary said. “We’ll have time to look at those.”

The board entered the day aiming to cut costs from the school’s $32 million spending plan. The cuts were recommended by the college administration.
