LEAGUE CITY — Probably no one in the city’s history exemplified volunteerism more than Art Hewitt.

Residents have until next week to nominate someone to be recognized for their own volunteer commitment to the city.

For 61 years, Hewitt was a part of the League City Volunteer Fire Department until his death in 2012. It was his volunteer spirit that prompted city officials to create the Art Hewitt Volunteer Spirit Award last year.

In fact, the city dubbed Aug. 30, Hewitt’s birthday, as League City Volunteer Appreciation Day.

The first recipient of the award was Douglas Bennett, a longtime volunteer fireman and former chief for the city.

Now in its second year, city officials are concerned because as of Thursday, only 16 people had submitted nominations for this year’s award, spokeswoman Kristi Wyatt said. The deadline for nominations is Aug. 4.

The award is open to all volunteers. While nominees do not need to live or work in League City, they must volunteer for a recognized city-related cause or project. That includes, but is not limited to, city-sponsored programs at the Helen Hall Library, volunteer fire department, animal shelter, Leaders Make Readers program, Volunteers in Policing program or the parks department.

The city asks that those making nominations note the nominee’s efforts between July 1, 2013, and June 30 of this year.
