PORT BOLIVAR — The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a weekend hit and run that killed a Killeen woman.

Paramedics found the body of Catalina Clara Delgado, 21, in the 1200 block of Loop 108 near Fort Travis Park at about 12:35 a.m. Saturday.

The paramedics were driving when they saw accident debris and a shoe lying in the roadway, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. They found Delgado’s body in a grassy area about 20 feet off the road.

Investigators determined that Delgado was struck while she was riding her skateboard and the driver fled the scene. The sheriff’s office said Delgado was wearing headphones when she was hit.

They did not say how long Delgado was believed to have been lying in the road before her body was found.

Delgado was staying with family on John Wayne Road in Port Bolivar while her mother is stationed with a military unit in Colorado, the sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff’s investigators found the charcoal gray Chevrolet truck believed to have struck Delgado. The truck, which was found at a house at Nelson Road and 14th Street, was missing a side mirror believed to have been knocked off when Delgado was struck.

Some of the accident debris found near Delgado's body included a truck mirror.

Capt. Barry Cook said the man believed to have been the driver of the truck refused to answer investigator’s questions. He was not taken into custody or charged because “no one saw him driving,” Cook said.

Investigators interviewed the suspected driver’s family who also refused to answer questions, Cook said. The Galveston County District Attorney's Office is directing the investigation, Cook said.

The sheriff’s office took the truck in as evidence and is running forensic tests to try to determine who may have been driving the vehicle at the time Delgado was struck and killed.

Anyone with information about the fatal hit and run should call the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office at 409-766-2333.
