LA MARQUE — The campaign to unseat La Marque Councilwoman Connie Trube appears to be coming to a screeching halt.

La Marque Mayor Bobby Hocking said the council will meet Monday to rescind the recall election for Trube after getting a second opinion from City Attorney Ellis Ortego.

Ortego could not be immediately reached from comment Friday morning.

Hocking said he did not know why the recall needed to be rescinded. He said that he asked Ortego to double check on the validity of the recall on Thursday.

Ortego responded later in the day to say that the recall resolution needed to be rescinded, Hocking said. The city attorney had originally informed the City Council that the election could move forward after two groups collected more than 100 signatures.

Trube questioned whether or not two separate recall petitions could be combined.

Valeri Beverly and Lee Clark led the effort to collect signatures to recall Trube. The two needed to collect at least 98 signatures from registered voters in District C to get the recall on the ballot.

Beverly checked out a petition form July 3 and turned it in on Aug. 4 with 63 signatures, of which 35 were verified, City Clerk Robin Eldridge said in a letter of certification.

Clark checked out a petition form July 7 and turned it in to the city on Aug. 7 with 115 signatures, of which 72 were verified, she said.

The council will meet at a special called meeting Monday at 6 p.m. to vote on rescinding the recall resolution.
