BAYOU VISTA — A family of three escaped unscathed with their pets, but little else, after a raging fire destroyed their waterfront home, a fire official said Monday.

Bayou Vista Deputy Fire Chief John Venzke said no injuries were reported in the blaze about 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Redfish Street.

When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting from the garage area toward the driveway, Venzke said. A police officer arrived first at the scene.

“Bayou Vista Police Department did assist the homeowner in getting the dogs out,” Venzke said.

A cold front brought substantial wind upon the canal home, fanning the flames in what Venzke called a “wind-driven fire,” which hampered efforts to battle the blaze.

Firefighters spent about two hours trying to take control of the blaze, but the house collapsed atop a car and on the rear of a pickup.

The fire also heavily damaged a camper in the driveway.

Fire crews remained on the scene Monday dousing hot spots in the rubble.

“We do have a car under there, and we’re in the process of working with the insurance company and the county to bring in a backhoe to try to remove the vehicle.”

A sheriff’s office fire investigator was assisting in determining what started the fire, but the blaze remained under investigation Monday, Venzke said.

Bayou Vista had help fighting the blaze from firefighters with the cities of La Marque, Galveston, Santa Fe and Hitchcock, Venzke said.
