LEAGUE CITY — By the end of next summer League City’s main artery, FM 518, will likely have a new median and turn lanes.

The project is in its early stages, but residents can take a look at the plans and bring up questions and concerns at a public meeting today.

The project, which stems from a 2004 Houston-Galveston Area Council study, entails installing a median and turn lanes along FM 518 from W. Bay Area Boulevard to FM 2094, said Linc Wright, League City’s traffic engineer.

The improvements are part of a Texas Department of Transportation project along FM 518 that runs from Pearland to Kemah.

The construction cost is estimated to be about $2.1 million. The city is responsible for the design cost, about $482,000, and about 20 percent of the construction cost, about $429,600, Wright said. The rest of the project is funded through bonds backed by the state.

Along with improving traffic flow, the project will improve safety, Wright said.

Access to property and business is likely to change during construction, which probably will begin in late fall and conclude in the summer of 2014, he said.

But the city will work with property owners to ensure they can still get in and out, Wright said.

The meeting will be informal. There will be no presentation, but residents will be able to look over maps and plans and talk to consultants and city staff about their questions and concerns, Wright said.

“We need to know what their concerns are so we can do our best to address them,” he said.
