TEXAS CITY — Monday authorities were still trying to find relatives of a pedestrian fatally struck by a car during the weekend.

The pedestrian a man believed to be from Texas City was struck at 11:55 p.m. Saturday in the 1700 block of state Highway 146 by a Bayou Vista resident Texas City police Capt. Brian Goetschius said.

Police didn’t release the pedestrian’s name until officers could tell relatives of his death.

Police believe the man was struck in the roadway while attempting to cross the highway. The driver stopped at a nearby exit and was not charged Goetschius said.

A woman found the man in the roadway. He’d suffered extensive trauma Goetschius said. Two men the driver and passenger of the car involved ran to her asking her to call police.

Police found the car at the exit ramp. It sustained extensive frontal damage.

Police learned the driver had attended a cook-off in San Leon and was headed south on state Highway 146 in the outside lane when the accident happened Goetschius said.

The driver never saw the pedestrian enter the four-lane divided highway Goetschius said.

The driver also showed no sign of having consumed alcohol but he voluntarily submitted a blood sample. The driver wasn’t arrested Goetschius said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy was scheduled for Monday or today a spokesman said.
