All tinsel, lights, decorations and plastic or metal stands must be removed for recycling.

UTMB and the city of Galveston will convert the trees to mulch for use throughout the year.

Sleep Center accreditation

The UTMB Center for Sleep Disorders recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

The Center is an important resource to the local medical community and provides academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.

To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM.

The UTMB Center for Sleep Disorders is directed by Dr. Shahzad Jokhio.

1115 Waiver enters third year

In December 2011, the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services approved Texas’ request for a new Medicaid demonstration waiver, better known as the “1115 Waiver” in accordance with Section 1115 of the Social Security Act.

UTMB, which anchors the state’s Region 2, recently submitted its first report to the Health and Human Services Commission.

The report allows all 20 anchors in the state to share regional activities and highlight progress to date.

National center for training

The National Biocontainment Training Center at the Galveston National Laboratory hosted an engineer and scientist from the Institute of Medical Biology in Kunming, China. Dr. Longding Liu and Qing Dai traveled to the GNL in December to review practices in place as a part of a two-week NBTC biocontainment engineering fellowship.

They worked alongside GNL biocontainment engineer Miguel Grimaldo to review various aspects of facility operation and management before returning home to their new biocontainment laboratory under construction at the institute in Kunming.
