UTMB will host the primary election today. Anyone registered to vote in Galveston County may cast a ballot at the polling place on the first floor of Rebecca Sealy Building, on Eighth Street between Postoffice and Market streets from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Voters will be required to show government-issued identification such as a driver’s license or passport in order to vote.

Lefeber Winter Lecture Series concludes

The 19th annual Lefeber Winter Lecture Series, presented by the Sealy Center on Aging, concludes today from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Levin Hall South Auditorium, 10th and Market streets.

“The national health and aging trends study: A new resource for studying disability and independence in older people” will be presented by Judith Kasper, professor of health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Healthy health policy lunch

Dr. Rishi Manchanda, president and founder of HealthBegins, will speak on how to leverage new tools to improve social determinants of health at the next Healthy Health Policy lunch and lecture series.

Manchanda will speak at noon Thursday in the Clinical Sciences Auditorium on the UTMB main campus.

The series is sponsored by the Offices of the President and Health Policy and Legislative Affairs, and co-sponsored by the Center to Eliminate Health Disparities and the UTMB student chapters of the American Medical Association and the Texas Medical Association.

UTMB Causeway 5K Fund Run

The School of Health Professions is hosting the SHP Causeway Fund Run/Walk on Saturday, in partnership with FitTriRun, to benefit student scholarships.

run. The course is certified, and preregistered 5K participants will be chip timed.

School nurse conference

“Shaping the health of our future” is the theme of the 34th annual school nurse conference from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Galveston Island Convention Center, 5600 Seawall Blvd.

This interprofessional program is hosted and supported by UTMB’s Nursing Service, School of Nursing and Department of Pediatrics.

Diabetes support group

“Navigation resources for people with diabetes” is the topic for this month’s meeting of the UTMB diabetes support group March 10.

The group meets from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month in Suite 9 of the UTMB Multispecialty Center and Stark Diabetes Clinic, 2660 Gulf Freeway S., in League City.

Silent Angels

Nominations are being accepted through April 4 for the UTMB Silent Angel award that honors a licensed nurse, non-nurse and a unit or group whose compassion, caring and advocacy made a difference in the life of a patient, family or friend.

Nominations should include a description of the special contribution and the nominator’s name.
