Texas City’s Greater Macedonia Baptist Church will present its fifth annual “Talent Extravaganza” scholarship benefit at 5 p.m. today at 6414 FM 1765.

“Twice a year, we give each recipient a special scholarship and then, every month after, we give them a grant,” said coordinator Annie Brooks. “Many of the recipients have become successful professionals and also a part of this scholarship ministry after graduation. They have shown great appreciation for this fund. We also give children school supplies as well as other needs. In the future, we hope to eventually provide scholarships to nonmembers. One of our recipients is a local public schoolteacher who is also a youth leader in our church with the praise dance team and is able to minister to both our church and community. Other professionals work at UTMB and help people in both circles.”

Admission is free; donations are welcome.

Calvary Houston will have a free Men’s Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 1 at 3700 FM 528 in Friendswood.

“We’re all familiar with the expression ‘Listen up,’” the Rev. Ron Hindt, Calvary’s pastor said. “We use it to get the attention of someone. With all of the distractions of daily life, it’s often hard to stop and listen to God. We’re setting aside this time to hear what the God has to say to us as men in the church.”

Galveston’s Grace Episcopal Church will have its Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 4 at 1115 36th St. with a cost of $5 per family.

The homemade menu will include blueberry, banana nut and plain pancakes, freshly made to order, along with door prizes and encouragement for the upcoming season of Lent.

“Bring the Mardi Gras season to a close with tasty pancakes and good company as we usher in the season of renewal preparing for Easter,” said organizer Ellie Hanley. “We’ll feature not only scrumptious pancakes, but also delicious toppings and citrus butters. Please join us.”

Shrove Tuesday precedes Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season. It’s also known as Mardi Gras (which, of course, is French for “Fat Tuesday”), but also is referred to as Pancake Tuesday in some quarters. The English word “shrove” links to the concept of a priest hearing a confession.
