HITCHCOCK — It was so wet and windy Thursday at the Galveston County Fair & Rodeo that event coordinators allowed commercial vendors to close up shop to protect their products.

The temperature dipped to about 60 degrees Thursday afternoon.

Fair board member Albert Ramirez said crowds were still expected to turn out for the Spazmatics concert and barbecue cook-off, but they would likely not be as large as previously expected.

“It will affect attendance a great deal,” Ramirez said. “There would be bad blood between us and the vendors if we didn’t allow them to pack up.”

Vendor Classy Cowgirl Dreams, from Weimer, sells western wear and jewelry. Covered by a tarp at the entrance to her booth, co-owner Margaret Besch said she lost a couple pairs of cowboy boots to a growing puddle near the back of the tent.

“We’re trying to protect them from the weather,” she said. “A lot of boots have gotten wet, and the tent only goes so far. We’d have more damage otherwise.”

Other vendors chose to leave, too, but the savory smell of grilled barbecue still wafted through the air.

Texas Sensations, a commercial vendor from Santa Fe, was still cooking Thursday. It wasn’t his first rodeo, owner Joe Jackson said.

“It hailed last year and we were still here,” he said. “When it’s windy and rainy like this, it can feel like you’re cooking over a campfire. But sometimes, we just have to fight the elements.”
