From the archives of The Daily News for Jan. 21:

  • In 1914, the Atlantic Fruit Co. reestablished service between Galveston and Mexico.
  • In 1989, voting in the special Galveston charter amendment election was expected to be light to moderate, according to most observers. Polls were open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For the first time, the city used the time card voting system, electronicly tallying the vote.
