From the archives of The Daily News for Jan. 6:

  • In 1914, county commissioners explained how $800,000 would be spent on road construction and improvements throughout the county.
  • In 1964, felony week opened in 56th District Court.
  • In 1989, the Galveston City Council approved a new policy, under which all new, permanent employees must pass a drug screening test before being employed by the city. City Manager Doug Matthews requested the new policy, and said his purpose was to get drugs out of the workplace.
