From the archives of The Daily News for Jan. 17:

• In 1914, delegates arrived for the Intercoastal Canal Convention, which was hosted by The Hotel Galvez.

• In 1964, a continuation of a cold spell was forecast to continue throughout the weekend with freezing temperatures on the mainland and near-freezing temperatures on the island.

• In 1989, with Martin Luther King Jr.’s voice booming from a car stereo in the background, a crowd of more than 200 marched in front of the La Marque City Hall chanting, “We shall overcome.”
