• In 1914, 103 German reservists arrived in Galveston from Mexico.

• In 1989, Emmett F. Lowry, mayor of Texas City for 25 years, died of a heart attack while working at his construction company. He was 73. Lowry served as mayor of Texas City for 13 terms — the longest tenure of any chief executive in the city’s history.

• In 1989, it was discovered that a former nurse’s aide charged with rubbing bleach around the eyes of an Alzheimer’s patient at a local nursing home had been fired earlier from two other nursing homes in the area.
