From the archives of The Daily News for Feb. 24:

  • In 1914, Mardi Gras in Galveston kicked off with a greater police presence, according to the police chief, to “protect those who are out for the fun and to see that their pranks of good nature are not spoiled by rowdiness of any nature.”
  • In 1964, the Clear Creek Wildcats entered the state basketball tournament for the 11th straight year, taking on the Wharton Tigers.
  • In 1989, the parents of Suzanne Renee Richerson filed a $3 million lawsuit against Casa Del Mar, claiming lax security at the hotel/condominiums was responsible for their daughter’s disappearance on Oct. 7. 1988.
