  • In 1914, the installation of two new wells greatly increased Galveston’s water supply.
  • In 1989, a 57-year-old man swimming in the San Luis Pass area drowned despite efforts by his sons to save him, police said. Officers said the victim was swimming with two of his sons near the toll bridge when they began having problems. The sons swam to shore to grab some rope and swim back out to their father, who was already dead.
  • In 1989, a 21-year-old Dickinson student studying in Beijing, fled from the city to the safety of Hong Kong.
