From the archives of The Daily News for Feb. 18.:
- In 1914, a school report showed there were nearly 4,700 students enrolled in Galveston schools.
- In 1964, a team from NASA was preparing for a space science lecture and demonstration at Ball High.
- In 1989, trustees of the Galveston Housing Authority voted unanimously to apply to the Department of Housing and Urban Development for permission to sell the Magnolia Homes housing project. The vote followed public expressions by five people, including Mayor Pro Tem Don Brooks, that the 147 housing units in the project should be rehabilitated and not demolished.
