From the archives of The Daily News for Feb. 5:

  • In 1914, the five small submarines that made up the Second Submarine Division of the Atlantic Squadron was set to leave Galveston for New Orleans.
  • In 1964, a federal official said the Scholes Field offices of the Federal Aviation Agency would close within 24 hours. The group had planed to close 42 offices in the country, four in Texas. The closing would save the FAA about $30,000, officials said.
  • In 1989, temperatures dipped below freezing in Galveston, thinning an expected record crowd of 400,000 for Mardi Gras to about 100,000.
