From the archives of The Daily News for Jan. 19:

  • In 1914, the city of Galveston appointed a committee to look out for the comfort of strangers.
  • In 1964, two children of Galveston County with diphtheria were admitted to John Sealy Hospital; the first such cases of the past two years.
  • In 1989, a Texas City man who was shot at least 12 times was in critical condition, while his suspected assailant was being held on charges of attempted murder.
