From the archives of The Daily News for July 30:

  • In 1914, the detailed program for the Texas-Louisiana militia was released.
  • In 1964, the Galveston City Council faced a heavy load as six ordinances came up for consideration.
  • In 1964, two people injured in a helicopter crash on East Beach the previous year filed a damage suit against the owner.
  • In 1989, a Galveston County jury acquitted Dr. Steven Brown of charges of acquiring a controlled substance by fraud, but Harris County prosecutors were seeking to revoke his probation. Brown pleaded guilty to possession of the controlled substance methaqualone, received a deferred sentence and was placed on eight years probation.
  • In 1989, Donna Jones, a 28-year-old Groveton resident, received a pancreas-kidney transplant at UTMB and became free of diabetes. For more than 18 years, Jones was engaged in what was proving to be a losing battle with the disease. But after hearing Dr. Philip Boudreaux, a surgeon at the island institution, give a presentation at a Lufkin dialysis unit, Jones signed up for the new surgical procedure.
