From the archives of The Daily News for Feb. 4:

  • In 1914, the Panama-Pacific Commissioner visited Galveston on an appropriation mission.
  • In 1964, six people connected with a policy operation in Dickinson received probationary terms in Galveston.
  • In 1964, the first shipment of bulk lard ever attempted at the Port of Galveston was attempted.
  • In 1989, whether the crowd was 100,000 or 500,000, the city of Galveston was prepared for the final two days of 1989 Mardi Gras, said City Manager Doug Matthews. Law enforcement personnel was increased by more than 20 percent from 1988’s festivities.
