In 1914, at a “heavy” expense, the Galveston coast defensives were being connected by 40,000 feet of insulated cable buried two feet below ground to give officers instant control of the batteries at Fort Travis, Fort San Jacinto and Fort Crockett. Officials said it would take several weeks to install the wiring and hook it up to the big guns.
