GALVESTON — The effect of this year’s seaweed season on the island has been a hot topic this week on the island.
On Thursday, I got up early to join the Galveston Park Board’s maintenance crews as they began their daily work of checking the beaches and moving large deposits of sargassum weed from some of the island’s most popular beaches.
The Park Board has been putting in long hours since the first seaweed landing came in April. This year’s seaweed season is expected to last through at least the end of July.
The beach maintenance department’s manager, Jesse Ojeda, talked to me Thursday about just what this year has been like.
