A 72-year-old man was killed Saturday in a two-car accident in the 9500 block of Seawall Boulevard that shut down traffic for more than five hours.

Galveston Police Department investigators said they believed the man, who was in a Toyota Sienna minivan, was driving west on the seawall when a black Infiniti SUV going east attempted a U-turn and struck the minivan on the driver’s side at 1:55 p.m., a police department spokesperson said.

The man driving the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A passenger in the minivan, the spouse of the deceased, was transferred to John Sealy Hospital at the University of Texas Medical Branch and is in serious condition, police said.

The male driver of the black Infiniti SUV was also transferred to John Sealy and is in stable condition, police said.

Authorities are investigating whether alcohol was involved, but police said no one has been charged.

Dickinson resident Jimmy Jones, who witnessed the accident, was going east on Seawall Boulevard to his father’s house and said people were stopping and trying to help.

“It was chaotic,” Jones said. “When I was driving by, there were at least a dozen people who were trying to help.”

Seawall Boulevard was shut down from 89th Street to near Cove View Boulevard.

All traffic was diverted to Stewart Road for more than five hours before Seawall Boulevard was reopened to traffic at the scene.A 72-year-old man was killed Saturday in a two-car accident in the 9500 block of Seawall Boulevard that shut down traffic for more than five hours.
