I didn't find out I was being sent to cover the special Princess Day for five-year-old Claire Lankford until this afternoon. I read the assignment and my wife mentioned that there was a lot of talk about it on social media, but I was still only expecting a hundred or so people.

Five-year-old Claire Lankford is carried by her father Kevin down the red carpet in front of their League City home as hundreds of people cheer during a special Princess Claire Day celebration on Wednesday evening February 19, 2014. Thousands of people turned out for the special event organized by family and friends in honor of Claire who has terminal cancer.

Needless to say that when I arrived I was blown away but the turnout. There were easily 2,000 people on hand I'd estimate. Student groups from Santa Fe, Dickinson and Texas City high schools all turned out in force.

Law enforcement officers from League City, the Galveston County Sheriff's Office and Texas DPS State Troopers were all on hand to help. The traffic was backed up for a mile in each direction on FM 646 with many supporters parking and walking 1/2 a mile to Claire's neighborhood.

All of the Houston media made the trip down which means I spent more time trying to ensure I wouldn't get squeezed out of a good spot to photograph Claire's reaction and less time documenting the crowd then I would have liked. Things can get tricky with big crowds in tight conditions, everyone is trying to get that perfect photo or video of the scene.

I'm glad I got sent to cover the celebration and I hope you enjoy these photos from Claire's special Princess Day.
