Inside COM COM to sound Jazz Appreciation Month with concerts

In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, College of the Mainland will host two concerts showcasing movie soundtrack classics, jazz hits and melodies with a South American flair.

The first concert is at 8 p.m. today in the COM Fine Arts Building. It will feature the COM Concert Band playing tunes from “The Planets” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” as well as the Latin American tune “Carnival de Brasil.”

The concert will also feature a performance of the fife and drum band from True Cross Catholic School in Dickinson. The True Cross Fife and Drum Band, directed by Miguel Rangel, pays tribute to America’s heritage with traditional music dating from the nation’s inception to just before the Spanish-American War.

In honor of Jazz Appreciation Day, the COM jazz combos will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall. The performance will feature jazz’s finest including George Gershwin’s “Summertime,” Nat Adderly’s “Work Song” and Harry Warren’s “There Will Never Be Another You.”

This month, the COM Fine Arts Building will house a Jazz Appreciation Month display with more than 40 historic jazz photos, books and instruments.

COM to host adjunct faculty job fair

COM will host its annual adjunct faculty job fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Anyone interested in teaching as an adjunct professor at COM is welcome to come learn more and bring copies of their résumé.

Safety institute to host training in honor of Worker’s Memorial Day

The Gulf Coast Safety Institute will host a weeklong series of safety training in honor of Worker’s Memorial Day. The classes will be offered today through Friday.

Worker’s Memorial Day, observed every year on April 28, is a time to honor those workers who have died on the job, to acknowledge the grievous suffering experienced by families and communities and to recommit to the fight for safe and healthful workplaces for all workers. It is also the day that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was established in 1971.

This yea, r the institute has partnered with the OSHA Training Institute Education Center at the University of Texas-Arlington to hold safety and health training at the Gulf Coast Safety Institute, 320 Delany Rd., in La Marque.

The institute will offer the following 7.5-hour classes:

Today — OSHA 7115 Lockout/Tagout

Tuesday — OSHA 7405 Fall Hazard Awareness in Construction

Wednesday — OSHA 7400 Noise in Construction

Thursday — OSHA 7410 Managing Excavation Hazards

Friday — OSHA 7505 Intro to Accident Investigation

The lockout/tagout course will be offered at no charge. The remainder of the classes cost $195 each. Those who register for two classes will receive a third free.
