GALVESTON — Mardi Gras on the island has always been a bit over the top. People dress in all sorts of wild get-ups either for the parades or just to attend the festivities.

The collection of some of Mardi Gras’ best costumes, though, isn’t found on The Strand. The season’s best costumes are featured during the annual Mardi Gras Costume Contest held each year at the San Luis Resort.

This is the 29th year for the contest, which has been moved back to the second Saturday of Mardi Gras Galveston. This year, the best costumes won’t be judged by a panel of celebrity judges, but rather the crowd that attends the contest poolside at the H2O bar at the resort.

The contest is open to anyone who can put together their best costume. There’s no specific theme to match, either, and entry into the contest only requires that you have a costume.

There is no entry fee.

Costumes will be judged on creativity, originality and the presentation. In recent years, costumed groups have been the big winners.

The poolside crowd will serve as the judges as Scott Sparks of The Eagle 107.5 FM hosts the event.

The winning costumed person or group takes home $300. There are also prizes for second and third places.
