The weather pattern for the past couple of weeks, with seasonally cool to chilly temperatures, followed by brief spells of somewhat milder weather and periods of clouds and light rain, should continue through the New Year’s Holiday into early January.

Looking specifically at New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, the latest forecast calls for temperatures on New Year’s Eve dropping into the upper 30s on the mainland to the low to mid-40s following afternoon highs in the mid-50s.

New Year’s Day should bring increasing clouds, a slight chance of rain and temperatures reaching the low 60s. This outlook is quite similar to what we saw over Christmas, with temperatures on Christmas Eve ranging from 40 degrees to 53 degrees in Galveston and 31 degrees to 53 degrees in League City, and temperatures on Christmas Day running from 49 degrees to 60 degrees in Galveston and 37 degrees to 57 degrees in League City.

By the way, the Houston-Galveston National Weather Service Office has an interesting graphic showing New Year’s Day weather from 2001 through 2013. As you can tell from this graphic, this year should have quite typical weather for what we have seen on New Year’s Day so far this century.

Looking further ahead, the models suggest push of cold, but not frigid, air following New Year’s Day, with a rainy, milder spell setting in for the first full week of January. In other words, more of the same!
