First the good news:. Milder weather is on the way for most, if not all of this week, as winds swing to the south ahead of the next system. Even better, the models have backed off the really frigid Arctic outbreak for Christmas.

Still, we are likely to see just about every kind of weather possible this time of year over the coming 10 days. This week will start on the sunny, seasonably cool side, with gradually increasing clouds and milder temperatures, reaching the 70s by Thursday and Friday.

Rain chances will increase through the weekend with fog, rain and a few thunderstorms as another cold front approaches and an upper-level system tracks east.

As for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, temperatures are looking to be seasonably chilly, but not extraordinarily cold. The week after Christmas may be somewhat sloppy, however, as the long-term models are promising a wet, chilly spell heading toward New Year’s Eve.

Overall, this is not a bad outlook compared to what had been projected early on, which is one reason why I tend to take forecasts beyond 10 days with a grain of salt.
