Dense fog, thunderstorms and a seasonably cool Christmas

Posted: Friday, December 20, 2013 4:58 pm | Updated: 2:41 pm, Mon Dec 15, 2014.

We will continue to see a wide variety of weather leading up to Christmas Day. Onshore winds and increasing humidity levels are contributing to fog formation and the issuance of a dense fog advisory for Galveston County through Saturday morning. The fog may cut visibility to 1/4-mile or less at many locales.

Meanwhile, an advancing cold front and a potent upper-level system will combine to bring widespread thunderstorm activity tonight over sections of Texas and tomorrow over Galveston County. Severe weather is likely for places north of the immediate Galveston County area. Such activity is a little less likely near the coast, as an upper-level “cap” (or layer of warm air above the surface) may suppress activity to some degree. Still, an upper-low tracking east into Texas may be enough to break the cap, so severe storms cannot be ruled out completely for our area.
