Pattern change will bring milder weather

Posted: Wednesday, January 8, 2014 10:29 am | Updated: 2:41 pm, Mon Dec 15, 2014.

A shift in the upper-level pattern to a more west-to-east zonal flow will cut off, at least for the time being, the flow of cold Arctic air into our region. As a result, milder conditions are likely to continue through the next week or so, although a Pacific cold front may bring cooler weather by late in the weekend and early next week.

As it is, the 31-degree and 28-degree lows in Galveston on Monday and Tuesday mornings, and the 27-degree and 24-degree lows in League City, brought the coldest weather to the county since February 2011. The cold, intense as it seemed , was far from a record-breaker overall. The coldest temperature for January in Galveston was an 11-degree low on this day in 1886. Other record January cold temperatures include 13 degrees in 1930, 15 degrees in 1940, 16 degrees in 1918, and 18 degrees in 1962 and 19 degrees in 1911, 1935 and 1963.
