According to at least one Texas high school football authority, the La Marque football team is a big underdog this week.

The fifth-ranked Cougars (11-1) will play the No. 1 Navasota Rattlers (12-0) at 7 p.m. Friday in the third round of the Division II-3A regional semifinals at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shenandoah. It’s a huge game, and saying the winner will have the inside track at a state title isn’t such an overstatement.

La Marque's Ladarrian Ellis-Jones slips away from Houston Furr's Justice Green.

But according to the Harris Ratings — a longtime Texas high school newsletter that gives point spreads on each game — the Cougars are 21-point underdogs against the Rattlers.

Twenty-one points. That’s three touchdowns. That’s the most amount of points allowed by La Marque this year during regulation. The Cougars gave up only more than that once — a 27-21 overtime loss to Coldspring, the team La Marque just beat by two touchdowns last week.

Yes, Navasota has a lot of impressive wins this season, but let’s not forget La Marque almost beat Coldspring in their first meeting when the Cougars were the top-ranked team in the state. If La Marque didn’t come up inches short on a fourth-down play in overtime against Coldspring and won, the Cougars still would be No. 1.

So, maybe the difference between La Marque and Navasota isn’t three touchdowns, it’s more like three inches.
