Gus’ Restaurant: Great service, generous portions and pours

You don’t have to go too far for the best authentic Texas barbecue, grilled to perfection steaks and seafood fresh from the Gulf! Just head over to Gus’ Restaurant in Texas City and enjoy their delicious food and a cold beverage. 

Owners Mike and Melissa Tucker have owned the restaurant for 33 years. They purchased the restaurant from Gus in 1980, after Mike had worked there for eight years prior as the manager, making his experience in the restaurant industry exceed 40 years. 

In December 2010, tragedy struck Gus’ when a fire broke out incinerating the previous location. But that didn’t stop the Tuckers, in February of 2011, Gus’ re-opened and business has never been better. 

“Our new location is doing quite well thanks to our loyal customers who we greatly appreciate,” Mike Tucker said.

The restaurant’s loyal following can be attributed to its wide variety of delicious and appetizing menu items. While Gus’ originally only served barbecue, when Tucker took over he added a variety of steaks to the menu. 

 

Menu

USDA choice filet mignon, rib eye,and New York strip are cut in the kitchen daily, and on top of that — literally — customers can choose to add steaming sautéed mushrooms, grilled onions or jumbo gulf shrimp to their steak. If you are in the mood for a burger, you are also in luck because Gus’ has the best burgers in town that are ground fresh from steak trimmings daily.

The seafood selections at Gus’ are as savory as the beef. Indulge in customers’ favorite fish selections like Marnay or Ponchatrain. The Marnay is eight to ten ounces of grilled fish topped with delicate crabmeat and large shrimp in a decadent mushroom cheese sauce. The Ponchatrain is grilled fish topped with sweet crabmeat, shrimp, and coated in a white wine cream sauce. Enjoy jumbo fried shrimp, catfish and chicken strips that have all been hand-battered with bread crumbs freshly made from their own fresh baked bread.

People have been known to travel long distances for the chicken picata at Gus’. The dish boasts two tender chicken breasts that have been panned to a golden brown topped with a lemon and wine and mushroom cream sauce. The meal, accompanied by a salad, roll, and rice pilaf, created quite a stir when Gus’ was in the midst  of relocating.

“I got 100 texts from people asking how they were going to get their chicken picata fix,” Tucker said.  

While Gus’ may make changes to the menu, Tucker will never replace customers’ barbecue favorites. Beef, ham, pork ribs, and sausage are smoked on-site daily. The best barbecue in Texas is served with choice of potato salad, cole slaw or beans and white or rye bread. Meats may also be purchased by the pound to enjoy at home or for holiday gatherings. 

 

Specials

Gus’ also has daily specials now! Appearing on the blackboard, take advantage of delicious specials during the week, including fresh snapper and asparagus when available.  

 

Full bar

Gus’ also offers patrons a fully stocked bar with an assortment of wine, mixed drinks, flavored martinis and bottled beer. Customers can enjoy drinks like apple and watermelon martinis and immensely popular cosmopolitans at reduced prices during happy hour Monday through Saturday from 4:30 until 6 p.m. Recently, Gus’ has also updated their wine list! If you are looking for a sweet drink to sip on, try their new chocolate martini!

“We buy the best in quality and have the best service around. I handpick all of the wait staff and cooks. We have the best chefs around and our portions are excellent and large,” Tucker said. 

 

Gus’ hospitable staff

The drinks and all food items at Gus’ are served by the most hospitable staff, many that have been at Tucker’s side for decades. Head chef Richard Tubbs has been with Tucker for 15 years. Fry cook and sauté chef, Billy Curry, has been on Tucker’s team for eight years. Both Bridget Sauer, who is the best bartender around, and her sister Breanne Mobley, who is the head waitress at Gus’, have been with Gus’ for many years. Michelle Skipper has spent 21 years ordering and expediting items for Gus’, and waitress Alicia Long has been one of Gus’ customers’ favorite waitresses for 14 years. Also, after his retirement from BP, Mike’s brother Danny Tucker has been an invaluable help to Mike and the restaurant. 

The aforementioned and all employees at Gus’ ensure Tucker is proud of the services rendered. 

“Gus’ means great service, great food and a friendly atmosphere. If you like all that, this is your place to come to,” Tucker said.
