Thousands of Americans feel worn out during the holiday season without wrapping one gift or attending one party. These are the family members who take care of aging parents or an ill spouse, relative or family friend every day, all year long. About one-in-seven middle-aged adults provides financial support to both an aging parent and a child. The “sandwich generation” is often used to describe these adult children of elderly parents who also have children (or even grandchildren) that require their assistance.

Nowadays, so many of us live away from our parents … and coming home for the holidays is often a wake up call for many adult children of elderly parents. This can also be the best time to take action.

The holidays are often a great time for family members to work out care solutions that everyone agrees on and help Mom or Dad stay at home.

Many seniors don’t want to ask for help or leave their homes, although they clearly need care and support. Right at Home helps seniors with a range of personal and companion care services to provide a safe, healthy environment and peace of mind for concerned relatives.

“What we find at Right at Home is that most seniors do not need 24 hour care — at least not at the time that a family member realizes that their elderly loved one needs help,” said Kristen Carlson of Right at Home. “Often, 3 hours a few times a week is all many older people need to remain safe and clean in their home environment. A trip to the grocery store, cleaning, laundry, taking to the doctor etc. is often enough to prolong any major decisions regarding moving Mom or Dad to a more confined setting or away from the place they call home.”

Ms. Carlson also recommends that families not wait for a health crisis to begin researching the choices in home care. Right at Home can provide care from 3 hours once a week up to 24 hours.

Right at Home (RAH) offers caregiving services for almost any family and practically any situation. RAH tailors their care to your unique situation through a Custom Care Plan. These individualized care programs are carried out through home care providers and include whatever your loved one needs:

• Companionship can provide stimulation and a mood boost for your loved one

• Light housekeeping services to keep your loved one’s home clean and safe

• Transportation to medical appointments, activities, hair appointments or wherever they need to go

• Grocery shopping: either with or without your family member including planning and preparation of nutritious meals

• Physical assistance such as bathing, dressing, shaving, transferring from bed to chair, incontinence care and toileting

• And much more!

Right at Home Greater Galveston was opened by Kristen Carlson in 2007 after seeing a need for patient-focused care in the Galveston County area. She promised her aunt, Estelle Greenwalt, that she would be able to live “right at home” as she aged. Right at Home ‘s mission is to “improve the quality of life for those we serve.” Right at Home directly employs all caregivers, each of whom are thoroughly screened, trained, bonded and insured prior to entering a client’s home.
