Q: What is the difference between Home Care and Home Health?

A: Home Care is often confused with Home Health Care. While Home Health must be ordered by a doctor and is typically paid by insurance, Home Care on the other hand is contracted between the patient or family and an agency such as Right at Home. There is no need for doctor’s orders and what we do is considered “non-medical,” which means that we help people stay “right at home” by helping them with the activities of daily living. These activities may be companionship, light housekeeping, laundry, meal planning and preparation or personal care such as bathing, dressing, helping with transfers or incontinence care. We coordinate our care with other providers such as Home Health, Physical Therapy and physicians.

Q: Why did you open up Right at Home of Greater Galveston?

A: About 8 years ago, I was looking for this type of care for my aunt, Estelle Greenwalt. I promised her that she could always stay at home as she aged. The companies we interviewed were all about what worked for them, not what worked best for my aunt: Things like requiring a minimum number of hours per week or not being able to meet the caregivers ahead of time. When Estelle passed away at 91 years of age, I thought that this would be the best way I could continue to give back to the Galveston area community. We provide services that my aunt would be proud of — services that are based on our clients’ needs, not ours.

Q: Who pays for home-care services?

A: Unfortunately, medicare does not provide for our types of services, so most of our clients pay out of pocket. There are some other sources, such as long-term care insurance and a program through the Veterans Administration called “Aid and Attendance.” We assist our patients and families with those programs. One good thing is that most elderly or disabled people only need a few hours a week to help them remain independent and living at home. 

Q: What sets RAH apart from other companies?

A: Besides being able to provide service anywhere from 3 to 24 hours, we do not have any minimum hours per week. Some clients or families use us just “as needed” and some use us for 24 hours a day. We provide peace of mind to our families so that they can spend time with their family member, not caring for them. We have a new software program that will allow family members to log in to the computer and view what tasks have been completed by the caregiver. There is never a long-term obligation for service with Right at Home, and we pride ourselves on the level of customer service we offer. 

Right at Home Greater Galveston was opened by Kristen Carlson in 2007 after seeing a need for patient-focused care in the Galveston County area. Right at Home’s mission is to “improve the quality of life for those we serve.” Right at Home directly employs all caregivers, each of whom are thoroughly screened, trained, bonded and insured prior to entering a client’s home.
